Pango is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was orphaned when his mum hit power lines and was electrocuted.
When they fell to the ground, he was covered in ants.
A member of public noticed him moving under his mum's wings but thought the mum was still barely alive, not realising mum bat had a baby on her.
Ant bites are potentially life threatening. If the wing membrane blisters it may not heal well, and it usually scars, which reduces much of the flexibility of the membrane so the wings are less reactively responsive and manoeuvrable in flight.
It is better to prevent a reaction to the bites than it is to deal with any damage resulting from them later.
These ants didn't seem to inject any irritant, so he came out of it unscathed. Lucky boy.
He's doing so well that he's been transferred to a new carer so he can be raised till creche in 3 months.
