1..Over a decade before the VW Beetle went into production, an 18-year-old Hungarian student named Bela Barenyi submitted a chassis design for a Volkswagen. She’s recognized as designing the basic foundations of the Beetle.

2..It Got Its Iconic Nickname from The New York Times

When production began in 1938, the public simply referred to the stylish little car as “Volkswagen” or “people’s car”. That same year The New York Times referred to the Volkswagen as a Beetle and the name caught on.

Most Countries Have Their Own Nickname for It

However, nearly every country has its own nickname in its language for the Beetle. In France they call it “Coccinelle” which means ladybug. Italy calls it Beetle but in their own language it’s “Maggiolino”. Bolivia calls it the “Peta”, which means turtle, and Indonesia uses “Kodak” (frog) to refer to the car.

The Last Beetle Ever is in a Museum

The last original Beetle, #21,529,464 was assembled and immediately retired on July 31st, 2003, in Puebla, Mexico, at the Volkswagen de Mexico manufacturing plant. The Beetle now resides on display at Volkswagen’s Auto Museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.
