This topic explores what emotions are, how they work, and why they matter. Students learn that emotions are complex responses involving three parts:
Physiological arousal (body changes like heart rate or sweating)
Expressive behaviors (facial expressions, gestures, body language)
Conscious experience (thoughts and feelings, e.g., fear, joy, anger).
The unit also covers major theories of emotion:
James-Lange Theory → Emotion follows bodily arousal (“We feel afraid because we tremble”).
Cannon-Bard Theory → Arousal and emotion happen at the same time.
Schachter-Singer Two-Factor Theory → Emotion = arousal + cognitive label (interpretation).
Finally, it examines universal emotions (like happiness, anger, fear, sadness, surprise, disgust), facial expressions, and display rules (cultural norms about when/how emotions are shown).
