As SOG doctrine evolves, the XM177, better known in SF as the CAR-15, is becoming the weapon of choice for members of SOG. The CAR-15 is a 5.56x45mm submachine gun. Because of Its light weight, high rate of fire, and quick reload time, it is the preferred weapon of the SOG operative. The CAR-15 comes in several variants, many including a muzzle device which acts as a flash suppressor and modifies the weapon’s sound to be similar to the AK-47 assault rifle, especially when fired in single-shot mode. It can be equipped with an XM148 underbarrel grenade launcher which fires 40mm grenades at a range of up to 400m. It is notable that the 20 and 30 round magazines in use during SOG operations have springs that often cause jams if loaded fully, which is why these magazines are seen loaded with 18 or 28 rounds. The CAR-15 can be equipped with optics including the 3x and 3-9x magnification scope. The AN/PVS-2 Starlite night vision optic can also fit the weapon, but bear in mind this optic requires specialized training for field use. SOG operatives often practice the hip fire method for engagements with the CAR-15, as using weapon sights is usually unnecessary in thick jungle canopy, however in SOG:PF Arma 3’s AOs the jungle tends to be less dense, which can sometimes mean greater distance in engagements. It comes down to operator preference – just make sure to practice hip-firing before using it in the field. It’s also recommended to tape together your 20 round magazines – use these dual magazines wherever possible – this will maximize the firepower you can put downrange in a short amount of time and ensure you spend the least time reloading. Your CAR-15’s full-auto functionality works well for immediately gaining fire superiority during initial contact, but be warned that if you get trigger happy on full-auto during a recon mission you will likely find yourself out of ammunition faster than you think. Pick your shots where possible.
