In cold silence, they murdered the sleeping king, beheaded him, and fled through the night, carrying his head like a trophy across the burning hills.

They thought they were bringing a gift to David—a gesture to win favor and secure position in a new regime. But they had misread the heart of the man they sought to serve.

When they presented the gruesome evidence in Hebron, justice was swift. David did not reward treachery. Instead, he ordered their execution and gave Ish-Bosheth a proper burial beside Abner, the commander they had both betrayed.
