Oral health impacts our general health, patients will stop eating and drinking and this will lead to patients staying longer at DVH.
Sarah has developed a training programme at DVH that is conducted on the wards for up to 15 minutes and is undertaken on the patients. The training is adhoc and user friendly.

The objectives of the Mouth Care Matter project is to increase the awareness of mouth care on the wards. For staff to look at the mouths of patients and notice different problems within the mouth such as ulcers, cancer and dryness of the mouth, as well as knowing what to do with the problems found, and what medications can also affect the mouth.

Sarah offers advice and support as well as resources such as a mouth care booklet which is an easy to use guide. Sarah has also produced an assessment tool which is user friendly and has pictures as samples to help know what the condition of the patients mouth is like. Sarah carried out a live assessment with one of the members of staff in the audience to help show how easy and simple it is to undertake an assessment and mouth care to our patients.

Sarah was involved in a health promotion called Oral Cancer Awareness in November 2016, and will be raising the importance of mouth care across adults and children in her upcoming health promotion Smile Month in May/June 2017, along with a Dry Mouth Awareness Day.
