WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO PLANT TULIPS

You're going to need a shovel, bulbs, and some nicely loosened soil with some organic matter if possible.

HOW TO PLANT TULIPS

You typically want to plant tulips with the pointed ends up, but it's ok if they're planted sideways or upside down. It's a myth that tulip bulbs need to be planted with the pointed end up, the sprout will still find its way up to the light and will be just fine.

The planting distance between tulip bulbs should be about 5 inches apart from center to center of each bulb. With that spacing you should be able to get about 2 bulbs in between each.

The planting depth for tulip bulbs is about 6 inches, and as a rule of thumb, two to three times the height of the bulb.

When you plant tulip bulbs, you want to plant in clumps of 10 to 15, and you'll want to stay away from planting in rows or too far apart, as they won't give you the show you're looking for in your
garden.

WHERE TO PLANT TULIP BULBS

Tulips are very versatile so you can plant them virtually anywhere. You can plant tulip bulbs in full sun, in full shade, in an open border, cutting bed, small borders, or containers.

TULIP BULB QUALITY

Don't worry if the skin of the bulb is cracked or completely gone, it doesn't really matter, if the bulb is still healthy it's not going to affect the size of the plant or the size of the flower it just aesthetically doesn't look as nice as the ones with the skin. What you don't want to plant is a tulip bulb that is soft and mushy or that has a lot of mold.

WHEN TO PLANT TULIP BULBS

The ideal time to plant tulips is in the fall, October or November, preferably before the ground freezes. You want to make sure the tulip has time to establish itself, and take root, so it has better preparation to get through the winter and has a nice head start when it sprouts in the spring.

TULIP AFTERCARE

After planting your tulip bulbs you can water them, but is likely not necessary unless you have very dry soil. In most areas and climate zones you should have enough natural rainfall for the tulips to get settled and form roots without any watering.
