Home Alone 3 (1997) is the franchise’s third theatrical film, marking the feature-length directing debut of Raja Gosnell and written and produced by John Hughes. The movie introduces a new storyline and cast, with Alex D. Linz playing Alex Pruitt, an 8-year-old who outsmarts a group of international thieves searching for a stolen microchip hidden inside a toy car. Produced on an estimated $32 million budget, the film earned roughly $79 million worldwide, performing modestly at the box office. While critics largely gave it negative reviews and it holds a low Rotten Tomatoes score, some audiences appreciated its slapstick humor and new lead character. Unlike the first two entries, it is not connected to Kevin McCallister’s story and was later followed by the made-for-TV sequel Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House (2002).
