Erdogan’s Cairo Visit Marks Growing Egypt-Turkey Diplomatic Thaw

Описание: MetroTV, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Wednesday highlighted the strength of ties between Egypt and Turkey, saying both sides were keen to deepen cooperation and step up joint coordination as the region grapples with mounting regional and international challenges, during talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We greatly value our relationship with Turkey, whose history is closely linked to Egypt’s. For decades, both countries have been committed to establishing the principles of peace and coexistence,” El-Sisi said during the joint press conference in Cairo.

He explained that the talks addressed positive developments in bilateral relations, stressing the need to continue steadily strengthening constructive cooperation in the coming period.

El-Sisi noted that the Gaza ceasefire was also discussed, emphasising the importance of implementing all stages of the agreement and preventing further escalation.

The Egyptian president reiterated his country’s commitment to Syria’s unity and sovereignty. He welcomed recent efforts toward regional stability, expressing hope that they would help preserve Syria’s unity and secure the rights of its various communities.

“We welcomed the recent agreement between the government and the Syrian Democratic Forces, and we hope it will help to preserve the country's unity and guarantee the rights of its different ethnic groups,” the Egyptian president said.

Historically, Ankara has categorised the SDF as a primary threat to its national security. President El-Sisi’s public endorsement of an agreement involving the group, made while standing alongside President Erdogan, signals a shift towards regional reconciliation.

Discussions also touched on efforts to de-escalate other regional tensions, including the Iranian nuclear issue and the repercussions of the Russia–Ukraine war. The two leaders stressed the need to ensure food and energy security for developing countries.

Turkey’s Erdogan arrived in Cairo earlier on Wednesday after concluding an official visit to Saudi Arabia. The visit marks his third trip to Egypt in the past two years.
