SNU's First Western Professor of Korean Traditional Music Hilary Finchum Sung - Family Trip to Jindo Island

Professor Hilary Finchum Sung's life changed when she first heard Korean shaman music while studying at the Indiana University in the United States where she majored in ethnomusicology.
In 2009 she became the first non-Korean professor to teach in the Department of Korean Traditional Music, Seoul National University, where she teaches world music, the theory of Korean music and ethnomusicology.
She has also been learning the haegeum for several years now in order to better understand Korean music. She chose the haegeum because she played the violin as a child, but the two-stringed Korean instrument turned out to have a completely different charm from the western instrument. After she began learning Korean traditional music, Professor Hilary Finchum Sung has had her hands full, but her family always provides her with strong support.
Last summer her entire family - her husband, daughter, twin sons and two dogs - visited Jindo Island, which is the third largest island in Korea after Jejudo and Geojedo.

인생에서 잊지 못할 운명적인 순간.
힐러리 핀첨성 교수에게는 지난 1997년이 그런 순간이었다.
미국 인디아나 대학에서 음악인류학을 전공한 그녀는 1997년 한국 무속 음악을 처음 접하고 매력에 빠져들었다. 그리고 지난 2009년, 서울대학교 국악과 최초로 서양인 교수로 채용됐다.
서울대학교에서 세계 음악, 한국음악이론, 음악인류학 등을 가르치는 힐러리 핀첨 성교수. 몇 년 전부터는 한국 음악을 더욱 깊이 이해하기 위해 해금을 배우고 있다. 어려서부터 배운 바이올린 때문에 선택한 악기지만 단 두 줄로 인간의 희로애락을 표현해내는 해금은 서양 현악기와는 다른 매력이 있다.
한국전통 음악과 인연을 맺은 후로 눈코 뜰 새 없는 나날들을 보냈다는 힐러리 교수.
그녀는 언제나 묵묵히 응원을 아끼지 않는 가족들에게 고맙고도 미안한 마음이다.
그래서 지난여름, 온 가족이 함께하는 여행을 준비했다. 든든한 남편과 큰딸, 쌍둥이 아들에 특별한 인연으로 가족이 된 두 마리의 반려견까지 총출동한 가족여행.
힐러리 가족이 목적지로 정한 곳은 한국에서 제주도, 거제도 다음으로 큰 섬인 진도다.
