What is Thaipoosam? Thaipoosam is an annual Hindu festival, celebrated by the Tamil community in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. It is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and is observed on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai, which occurs in January or February.

This Hindu festival represents the triumph of good over evil, as well as faith, strength, and diving blessings. According to Hindu mythology, it marks the day when Godess Parvati gifted Lord Murugan a sacred spear (Vel) to vanquish the demon Soorapadman, removing obstacles and restoring righteousness.
