The question of whether non-believers can go to heaven is a subject of much debate within various Christian denominations, and interpretations often depend on different theological perspectives.
However, from a strictly biblical standpoint, there are several passages in relation to the importance of faith, salvation, and the criteria for entry into heaven.
I’d like to share those scriptures with you to help answer this question for you:
You Need To Have Faith in Jesus
The most direct teachings in the New Testament indicate that faith in Jesus Christ is the pathway to salvation and eternal life.
One of the most cited verses in this context is:
John 14:6 (NIV): Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
This verse is central to the Christian belief that faith in Jesus is essential to reaching heaven and knowing God.
You Must Have Belief and Righteousness
Another perspective is that belief in God and righteous living are paired, which is based on verses like:
Romans 10:9 (NIV): "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
This passage clearly emphasizes belief in Jesus's resurrection as a criterion for salvation, highlighting the importance of faith.
There Will Be Judgment According to Deeds
There are also scriptures suggesting that individuals are judged based on their actions, in addition to, or aside from, their faith.
Matthew 25:31-46 describes the "Sheep and the Goats" parable, where Jesus explains that people will be separated into two groups based on their actions towards "the least of these brothers and sisters of mine" (v 40), suggesting a judgment based on deeds of kindness and mercy, not exclusively professed faith.
You’ll Need God's Sovereignty and Mercy
Some Christians argue that ultimate judgment is in God's hands, and He may be merciful based on His omniscience and understanding of every person's heart.
This view is often based on scriptures about God's boundless mercy.
1 Timothy 2:3-4 (NIV): "This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."
The above verse underscores God's desire for all people's salvation, leading some to the belief in the possibility of salvation even for those who have not been introduced to or accepted Christian teachings in their earthly life.
The Concept of 'Inclusivism'
This theological perspective isn't strictly a biblical passage but an interpretation of various scriptures.
Inclusivism is the belief that while salvation is only through Jesus Christ, this includes those who have not had the opportunity to know Jesus but have lived righteous lives according to their understanding.
We can’t ignore the fact that many pass without ever having the opportunity to find the gospel, and this includes young children and those with mental disabilities.
Various Christian traditions have different interpretations of how these non-believers will be judged, but most agree that scriptures portray God as merciful and just.
So, in conclusion, there are different schools of thought when it comes to answering whether or not non-believers can or will go to heaven.
But at the same time, there are a number of passages that clearly give us some direction on the subject.
I only hope the scriptures I’ve shared with you in this video help you to decide how you feel about this question - and I welcome all and any feedback you have.
