MONTY MOLE AND THE TEMPLES OF LOST SOULS is a classic homebrew arcade platform game released in 2017 for Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K/128K computers. The game was created and released by Andy Johns, a retro scene enthusiast who decided to revive the iconic character of Monty the mole in a completely new adventure that remains faithful to the spirit of the originals.
In the game, we play as Monty, who, driven by curiosity, finds himself in the mysterious Temple of Lost Souls. It quickly turns out that this is no ordinary place, but one full of traps, hidden passages and enemies such as ghosts and scorpions. The player's goal is to guide the hero through the temple's static screens, collect artefacts and gems, unlock new passages, and find a way to escape before Monty remains one of the lost souls forever.
The gameplay is based on precise jumps, memorising the layout of the boards and skilfully avoiding dangers, which perfectly captures the atmosphere of the golden age of the ZX Spectrum. The items collected not only increase the score, but are often the key to further progress, adding an element of exploration and logical thinking. The whole game is presented in a raw, retro graphic and sound design, faithful to the capabilities of the hardware, but designed with a modern sensibility.
