Growing seasonal vegetables in a cardboard box is an innovative idea for low-budget gardening and the best use of resources. By following a few simple steps, you can also create a mini-garden that yields fresh, homegrown vegetables.
Selecting the Box: Choose a sturdy cardboard box that is at least 6 inches deep, and wide enough to accommodate the desired vegetables' root systems.
Preparing the Box: Line the inside of the box with a plastic sheet or a few layers of hard cardboard sheets to prevent the cardboard from becoming too wet and deteriorating quickly.
Drainage holes: Poke small drainage holes in the bottom of the box to allow excess water to escape, preventing waterlogging that could harm your plants' roots.
Soil Selection: choose any normal garden soil except black clay soil and 20% organic compost for the plantation of seasonal vegetables.
Check the moisture level regularly and water thoroughly, avoid over-watering, as this can lead to root rot.
Do not water over the cardboard planter.
Place the cardboard box in a full sunlight area. Ensure the box is stable and won't be disturbed by wind or by other things.
Generally, seasonal vegetables don't require any fertilizer if planted in the ground but for plants grown in a container or pot, a balanced organic fertilizer is necessary once or twice a month for high yield.
Harvest them when they reach the desired size. Regular harvesting promotes further growth and encourages the development of new vegetables.
