I filmed this underwater striped bass video over a sandbar on Cape Cod during September of 2019. Conditions were bright and sunny and it was the middle of the afternoon.
Several dozen striped bass were calmly swimming over a shallow sand bar, and were more less "hanging around" as opposed to actively hunting and feeding.
For bait in this video I am using a chunk of mackerel. I had caught the mackerel a few weeks before this trip, and had kept them frozen. For a hook I am using a size 6/0 Trokar circle hook. Circle hooks are now mandatory when striped bass fishing with live or dead bait in Massachusetts.
You'll see in this video that the stripers circle and investigate the chunk of mackerel before eating it. Finally one of the striped bass decides to ingest the bait, but soon thereafter he coughs it up!
Striped bass are an amazing fish, and I imagine that this particular striper probably felt that something was off with the bait. Maybe he felt the hook, or maybe he felt the weight of the camera on the line. Or perhaps the frozen bait didn't taste quite right. I guess we'll never know for sure but I assume the truth is probably a mix of all of the above.
I hope you enjoyed the quick underwater striped bass video clip. I know I enjoyed filming it! With each underwater video outing I seem to learn something new and witness something amazing.
