Nature, with all its diverse components, is not privately owned by individuals. It is a shared environmental treasure that we have inherited by being born in a country rich in endemic trees and diverse forests.
Our duty as individuals is to protect forests, contribute to expanding green spaces, and put a stop to illegal logging.
To maintain environmental balance, green spaces should cover at least 20% of a country's territory. However, in Lebanon, forests cover only 13.2% of the country's surface area.
According to recent studies, Lebanon's forests are facing severe threats and ecological stressors, including wars, frequent wildfires, rapid urban expansion, and unsustainable land-use practices.
As individuals, it is our responsibility to act sustainably and protect our country’s natural resources. Instead of contributing to deforestation through indiscriminate tree cutting, we must recognize the serious threats facing Lebanon's forests. Preserving these vital ecosystems is directly linked to our long-term environmental sustainability and quality of life.
Viable alternatives are available, with responsible trimming being the most significant. Utilizing the abundance of dead trees and logs found across various Lebanese regions can help reduce environmental impact. Moreover, implementing initiatives to plant trees for sustainable logging, alongside smart forest management planning, is crucial for preserving Lebanon's natural resources.
