In this video I go over how to build a benchtop wiring harness establishing a class 2 serial data interconnect between a GM P11 PCM (powertrain control module), BCM (body control module), RDS Radio, DRR (XM Radio) receiver, and IPC (instrument panel cluster) module pulled from a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier. It can serve a similar purpose as the GM Off Board Programming Adapter (OBPA). With it I will be using a GM Tech2 scan tool to test and exercise the modules (you could also use the GM MDI tool). I will go over the connector pinouts you would need to salvage from a donor vehicle using the GM factory service manual schematics, as well as the wiring and interconnects to replicate the setup shown.
The example parts illustrated in the video is from a 2004 Chevy Cavalier J-Body, and so would apply EXACTLY to these models / years:
2002 - 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier
But the approach is built around the 2002 2003 2004 and 2005 series GM P11 PCM, so the harness layout and wiring approach would be very similar for these additional models / years:
2002 - 2005 Pontiac Sunfire w/ 2.2 Ecotec
2004 - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Classic w/ 2.2 Ecotec
2002 - 2004 Oldsmobile Alero w/ 2.2 Ecotec
2002 - 2005 Pontiac Grand AM w/ 2.2 Ecotec
2002 - 2004 Saturn L-Series w/ 2.2 Ecotec (LW200, LW300, L300)
While the PCM I show at the end of the video has GM part 12587611, the electronics involved for all these makes and models with the 2.2L Ecotec engine should all be very similar to what I've shown in this video, even though the PCMs may carry different GM part numbers. So on this concern match by the visual appearance of the PCM I show near the end of the video, and the original engine being the 2.2L Ecotec, rather than the PCMs' part number for the applicability of this video to your project.
You can use a bench top harness like this for several repair and test purposes, such as to reflash a PCM calibration using GM SPS (service programming system) with the Tech2 over TIS2000 (or TIS2Web with a paid ACDelcoTDS.com subscription), VIN UNlock an RDS radio to the connected BCM stored VIN, or test the stepper motors and illumination in the instrument panel cluster, for example. The construction approach I took was to build out the harness from salvage yard donor vehicle wiring pieces and modules, just on the bench for convenience, and use it with the Tech2 and/or MDI, such as if you were going to replace and reprogram your PCM with a donor salvage yard unit using GM SPS, for example.
While this video will not directly apply to GM vehicles before 2002, or after 2005, the concepts and theory would. Access to the appropriate model year GM factory service manual, and the working example hookups I've shared in this video, should help you build a benchtop harness for ANY class 2 serial communications based PCM arrangement from GM.
