Derivation of the sigma molecular orbitals of diborane (B₂H₆) using the projection operator method. Diborane has very unusual bonding, with two (2) hydrogen atoms "bridging" two (2) boron atoms. The bonding in this molecule is best understood using molecular orbital theory.
Another interesting feature in the derivation is that there are two (2), chemically distinct types of hydrogen atoms. In ¹H NMR, these two (2) types of hydrogen have different chemical shifts.
