Kalø Castle ruins are the remains of a royal castle, located in Kalø Vig on the south coast of Djursland. The royal castle Kalø Castle was founded by King Erik Menved around 1313 as one of at least four castles in Jutland to strengthen the royal power after extensive peasant uprisings. The purpose of the new castles was to force the surrounding population into obedience, which is why these "forced castles" were obviously hated. Christoffer II had to accept in his pledge in 1320 that the new castles should be demolished. Kalø was demolished already a decade after its construction, but quite significant remains remained.
In 2016, the tower at Kalø Castle ruins had a staircase built in. The stairs have been created in collaboration between Realdania and the Danish Nature Agency. The stairs can be removed again.
