This is a demonstration of the Burk Flange Alignment Tool manufactured by the G.A.L. Gage Company.

It is a quick, easy way for both the craftspeople to check the alignments of their flange assemblies and also for the inspectors to measure the compression and alignment of the flange after installation.

It comes with three nibs:

One, the 150 / 300# nib
The 400 and over pound nib
And the nib to measure the external high / low up to a maximum of 1/16"

On the back of the tool, are the tolerances as listed by the ASME code.

So we have an example here of a 600# flange, let's use the tool to see if it's acceptable.

If the nibs cannot enter between the flanges, it has the correct gasket compression. As you can see, it will not enter.

Measuring the external high / low, you can see that it is perfectly flat. An acceptable flange connection.

Looking at this 150# flange connection, we have here, using the 1/16" nib, you'll note that it has over a 1/16 of an inch high / low. Which is unacceptable.

Using the 150 / 300# nib, you'll notice that it can't be inserted on one side, but can be completely inserted on the other. Which means that this has incorrect misalignment and needs to be re-worked.
