How To Clean & Restore Rusty Weights

Go to a local hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowes. Buy a steel brush for scrubbing the rust off of your weights. Also buy a sealer paint such as Rustoleum in the color you'd like (black or silver are the common options). If you want to go the extra mile, buy some white sealer paint as well for painting any numbers or letters. You would need a small paint brush for that. Next, go to any grocery store and buy the cheapest vinegar they have.

Before you begin, have a plastic tub that's big enough to hold your weights. In my video I used a metal tub which may have been bad for 2 reasons; the vinegar had a reaction with it, plus the tub became rusty. Some sources suggest using the steel brush on the weights before soaking it in vinegar. Don't waste your time. I scrubbed for almost 2 hours on three 45 lb Olympic plates, which did nothing in comparison to soaking them in vinegar. The second set of 3 that I had, I didn't scrub first, just soaked, and they turned out fine.

Place the weights in a tub. Poor vinegar all over them. It's ok to mix water in with the vinegar if you don't have enough vinegar. Let the weights soak for 2 days. In the video, I soaked mine for 36 hours, which is enough. Wearing a rubber glove, pull the plates out of the tub. Wipe the plates down with a towel that you don't mind ruining. If you have a pressure washer or a sand blaster, I bet that would work great. Otherwise, use a steel brush and scrub the rust off of the weights. The rust should come off fairly easy. As soon as possible, spray paint the weights. If you use cardboard under the weights, DO NOT lay the painted side of your weights on it until completely dry.
