Описание: The sanctuary-basilica of the Madonna del Pettoruto (from petruto , i.e. stony) is located in San Sosti , in Italy, at 543 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Montea . It is located in the gorge formed by the Rosa river between Mount Montea and Mount Mula.

It is a destination for pilgrimages throughout the year but especially in September when, in the days ranging from 1 to 8 September, the traditional millenary fair in honor of the Madonna takes place down in the valley.

A legend about its origin tells that a man named Nicola Mairo, originally from nearby Altomonte, unjustly accused of murder and took refuge on the mountain where the sanctuary stands today to escape capture, would have had a mystical vision and would therefore have sculpted, during his in hiding, the image of the Madonna and Child on a tufa rock; in 1449 the Mairo was cleared of all charges.

 In the early 1600s a deaf-mute shepherd boy discovered the image carved in the rock while he was looking in the woods for one of his sheep who accidentally left the flock, the Virgin gave him the word again so that he could reveal the place to everyone and have a sanctuary built for her dedicated.

The sanctuary was built by the will of Bishop Felice Greco , bishop of San Marco Argentano and Bisignano from 1824 to 1840, subsequently elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1979. 

Also relevant is the link with the Madonna del Pettoruto that devotees around the world have. In San Isidro, Argentina, there is a community in honor of the Madonna del Pettoruto. Families who emigrated from San Sosti and settled in Argentina have continued to practice the cult by reproducing the same anniversaries. Other communities in Canada and the United States have brought with them the faith towards Our Lady and the Sansostesi traditions.

A noteworthy anniversary is the feast of the "Cinta", which has its roots in the remote past and is celebrated on the first Sunday in May. The legend from which this anniversary takes its cue tells that, in an immemorial time, the population living in the towns bordering San Sosti was struck by terrible disasters (earthquakes, plague epidemics, etc.)

And to escape these cataclysms, they prayed to the Madonna del Pettoruto and took a vow; the object of the vote was a rope soaked in wax, which symbolizes the thread with which the Madonna would have encircled the villages to protect them from devastation.
