"No!" Christine's hand shot out, fingers locking around his sleeve with shocking strength. "No, please don't take her! Don't separate us! I'll go with you, I'll do anything, just don't—"
"I'm not separating you." The words came out softer than any he'd spoken in years. "You're both coming. Both of you."
Christine's eyes searched his face, looking for the lie, the trap, the inevitable betrayal. She'd learned not to trust. He could see it written in every line of her small, exhausted face.
He met her gaze and held it. "I promise."
