There's quite an interesting story we sort of discussed the other day about
00:03
Nathan Rothschild and the insider information that he got that potentially
00:08
could have led to the great wealth he managed to accumulate. So I'm wondering if
00:12
you can talk a bit more about that?
00:22
Well the legend is that Nathan Rothschild
00:25
made a fortune after the Battle of Waterloo on the basis of information
00:29
that he knew that the market didn't know. If you google that you'll see that their
00:36
competing arguments and certainly the Rothschild family were very wealthy.
00:41
They were family that basically the patriarch had sent his sons to
00:46
different parts of Europe, to France, to Germany, and to England.
00:53
They all basically were in the banking,
00:59
investing, financing business. But the Battle of Waterloo in 1812 was a
01:07
watershed moment because Napoleon had come back after his defeat before and
01:16
his captivity. Had reassembled the grand French army and was off to reconquer Europe.
01:22
Clearly there was a fair bit of concern in the UK or in England as it was at
01:29
that time. The British Army had been dispatched to the continent under the Duke
01:39
of Wellington and a battle took place at the area of Waterloo which is in
01:46
Belgium and basically the victor of that would decide the course of history going
01:52
forward. It was a Napoleon that would mean the British Army had been defeated
01:57
maybe he would invade England but certainly he'd be
02:02
the undisputed master of Europe. So there's Water loo on one side and then
02:08
there was the Prussians and
02:13
Waterloo was a very close run outcome. The markets had
02:21
thought that Napoleon would would win because their had been a prior French victory
02:29
another area that sort of caused the markets to be pretty
02:37
sensitive to negative news and the markets had apparently
02:44
been formed because there was an expectation that there'd be a defeat
02:50
at Waterloo as well what happened of course as we know is that the Duke
02:55
of Wellington was able to defeat because of the intervention of the Prussians of
03:00
at the critical part of the battle defeat Napoleon and the British
03:06
were victorious the news of that had to get back to the UK and it was a
03:12
question of who got there first apparently Wellington dispatched a
03:19
rider to ride to the coast get a boat and then ride on to London to
03:25
inform the king at that time that they were victorious Rothschild one
03:33
legend says that he used his pigeon post to get the news first what was more
03:40
likely I suspect that he had a series of dispatch riders a bit like the American
03:46
Pony Express rather than one rider arrived in the distance there'd be a
03:50
succession there and apparently he got the news 48 hours ahead of everyone else
03:57
and used that information to be able to let the market fall on the expectation
04:04
of a bad result bought at the bottom and kept buying and off course
04:09
the brought and held and when the market went up he was a very very
04:13
wealthy man I suspect he was already wealthy and this just added to his wealth
04:18
it wasn't really what you'd call insider trading as it's known today which is of
04:24
course illegal he just had advance notice of an event
04:29
and he was able to use that his own and family's benefit
