Trains Passing Through Malahide, Dublin, Ireland - 7 October, 2025: • Trains Passing Through Malahide, Dublin, I... .
Malahide Station is a suburban railway station located in the coastal town of Malahide, County Dublin, Ireland. It serves as the northern terminus of the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) line, as well as being part of the Northern Commuter and mainline rail routes operated by Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail). The station is situated on Station Road, close to the centre of Malahide village, and provides important rail connections between the town and central Dublin, as well as onward links to Drogheda, Dundalk, and Belfast.
The station originally opened on 25 May 1844 as part of the Dublin and Drogheda Railway. Like many early Irish stations, it was designed in a Victorian architectural style, with a stone-built structure that has been preserved and adapted over time. Malahide was a key point on the line due to its location at the northern end of the Broadmeadow Estuary crossing, one of the most notable engineering features on Ireland’s rail network. The viaduct over the estuary connects Malahide to Donabate and remains a prominent local landmark.
In its early years, Malahide Station handled both passenger and goods traffic, serving a community that was then much smaller and more rural than it is today. As suburban development expanded in the twentieth century, particularly from the 1960s onward, the station became increasingly important for commuters travelling into Dublin. The introduction of the DART service in 1984 significantly increased passenger numbers, turning Malahide into a busy suburban terminal with frequent electric train services to the city centre and south Dublin.
Malahide Station consists of two platforms, connected by a footbridge and a pedestrian level crossing. The main station building, on the east side of the tracks, includes a ticket office, waiting area, and ticket machines. Passenger facilities also include shelters, seating, and electronic display boards providing real-time service information. Outside the station, there is a small forecourt area with bus stops and parking for cars and bicycles, allowing for integrated transport connections.
In August 2009, the station briefly gained national attention when a section of the Broadmeadow viaduct collapsed after the partial failure of its supporting embankment. This caused a temporary closure of the line between Malahide and Donabate, with services suspended for several months while major repair work was carried out. The viaduct was fully restored and reopened in November of the same year, returning Malahide to normal operation.
Today, Malahide Station remains a key point in the Dublin suburban rail network. It marks the northern end of the DART line and serves frequent commuter trains as well as regional services to northern towns. The station’s setting near the coast and Malahide Castle makes it popular with both residents and visitors. Although modernised to meet contemporary transport standards, the station retains much of its original character, reflecting its long history as part of Ireland’s early railway infrastructure and its continuing role in daily travel across the Dublin region.
