'Hands off Venezuela': Protesters chant insults outside Maduro court hearing in New York

Описание: Deposed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were seen being taken to a New York court on Monday morning. During Maduro's first court appearance, Maduro declared himself "innocent" and pleaded not guilty. He was captured by troops on Saturday and charged with narco-terrorism.

“I’m innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man, the president of my country," Maduro told 92-year-old federal judge Alvin K. Hellerstein through a translator, according to the New York Times. His wife, Cilia Flores, also pleaded not guilty.

When Judge Hellerstein asked Maduro to identify himself, he immediately said he was kidnapped and captured at his home in Caracas, before the judge cut him off, explaining, “there will be time and place to get into all of this." The next hearing is scheduled for March 17.

As he stood up to leave the courtroom, the New York Times reported Maduro said in Spanish, "I am a prisoner of war."
