This car was throwing a check engine light, flashing EPC light occasionally, and sucked! About 1/3 the power output!!
Update** Please see the update video after this! I show how my HPFP, in reality, fail!!**
I did not have a VAGCOM or “know-how” to use one if I had one. The car was throwing P2293, P2294, and P0087 on my basic code scanner.
After reading many forums, I found that the P2293 and P2294 codes rarely throw together, and thought the solution would be different from the standard “default” responses everyone posts on all the threads i.e. cam follower, thrust sensor, low fuel pressure sensor, low pressure pump, high pressure pump, N276 switch... etc.
Long story short. Change the fuel filter. If you’ve got problems and know your cam follower is good, and all the sensors and connections are right. Rent a fuel pressure gauge from and auto parts store and screw it on the valve on the high pressure pump and start the car. If it cannot give you a solid number, and is fluctuating around “unregulated” the switch out the fuel filter. The fuel filter has an integrated fuel regulator inside of it.
Not sure if this matters, but thought it was worth to note, my car always hated cold, took longer to start, ran rougher and the power and check engine and EPC lights all flipped on when we had a series of days below 0 degrees. Today, after I fixed it, it starts better and is truly a joy to drive in cold weather!
