Lie, Lay

When I recline, I lie with an “I”. Yes, lying is what I like to do,
But don’t worry- I mean reclining, not lying to you.
Yesterday, I lay in the hay all day!
And, I have lain (in) a bed on a train.
My name is Rose, I sit and rise. When I get tired, in bed I lie.
Oh yeah, I sit, rise, and lie -uh huh, what about you?
Sitting, rising, and lying is what I do.
But don’t worry, I mean reclining not lying to you.
When I have lain in my bed, I rise once again.
Then after I have risen, I make a little grin,
And think of the word “lain” and see the word “in”.
I think, “Wow, I had lain in my bed”,
And the word “in” in lain gets stuck in my head.
I think, “I sat, lay, and rose as quick as I could.
And I have risen, sat, and lain whenever I should”.
All performed by the subject, you know, Rose.
And are intransitive without a DO.
Never say, “I’m going to lay down,” that is just wrong.
Say “you’re going to lie down” like you learned in this song.
Never say you have laid down or laid down, my friend.
(memory trick) They both have “Ds” in them.
And that’s what you deserve, if you say them wrong again.
When you see the “D” in laid think, Oh!
It’s transitive and needs a DO.
What’s a DO? That, too, you should know. It’s a direct object;
Like, I laid down money to go to the show.
Money is the DO.
Lay, laying, laid, and (have) laid, they all need a DO.
I lay down the hay. I laid down my essay.
I am laying down the tray, and I have laid down the bouquet.
The Direct objects are hay, essay, tray and bouquet.
One last thing, next time you lie down, say in your head,
“I lie down with an “I” and I have lain (in) my bed.”
