Julius McRymboh Okello — known to the world simply as Okello Max — wasn’t born into fame. He grew up in the humble village of Kanyakwar, Kisumu County, Kenya, where music wasn’t just a pastime — it was life itself. From the tender age when most children chased balls and dreams, young Julius found himself drawn to hymns and melodies. Every evening after supper, the voices of his family would rise together in song, binding them in harmony and shaping the soul of a future artist.
It was in church choir, guided by his late uncle, that Okello Max discovered his voice. Surrounded by chants, rhythms, and an early exposure to taarab and rumba in Lamu, the young boy’s passion for music grew into something deep and undeniable.
But music wasn’t his first dream. Like many youths, he once told his father he wanted to work in media — a path his dad dismissed as “not a real career.” Undeterred, Okello repeated a school year to try and meet his father’s academic expectations, but soon fate called him to a different stage.
He went on to Moi University where he studied Linguistics, Media, and Communication — and polished his talents in performance, songwriting, and guitar playing. It was here that his voice matured, and his ambition took shape.
Early in his journey, Okello Max lent his voice behind the scenes, singing as a background vocalist on tracks for some of Kenya’s biggest acts — from Sauti Sol to Bensoul — gaining experience and confidence with every session.
His big break came in 2019, when he was featured on Sauti Sol’s hit “Extravaganza.” That same year, he released his debut single, “Kiss”, featuring Jerry Ogalo — a song that introduced Kenya to the soulful vibe and unique fusion that would become his signature.
From there, Okello Max blossomed. Tracks like “Nakufa,” “Amezaliwa,” and “Rhumba Japani” showcased the richness of his voice and his respect for both tradition and innovation. His ability to weave Dholuo, Swahili, English, Afro-soul, rumba, and modern Afrobeat into vibrant musical tapestries didn’t go unnoticed.
As his star rose, so too did his artistry. In 2025, he unveiled his ambitious album Healing, a deeply personal project that spans genres and emotion — from Afro-pop rhythm to Latin grooves — and reflects a journey of resilience, love, pain, and renewal.
But Okello Max’s story doesn’t end in East Africa. When global icon Ciara spotlighted his remix of “How We Roll,” fans and critics alike saw what many already knew — here was a voice with international reach and cultural depth.
Offstage, Okello Max is more than an artist. Though his music beats loud, his life at home is quieter and profound. For years he’s been a husband and a father of two daughters, balancing the roar of crowd applause with the quiet joy of family life.
Today, whether collaborating with Kenyan stars like Willy Paul or crafting sounds that bridge continents, Okello Max carries one unwavering belief: that music heals, connects, and tells the stories we sometimes can’t say out loud.
