The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has inaugurated a committee on State Policing, describing the initiative as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture and deepening community based policing nationwide.
Speaking at the maiden conference with strategic police managers and the inauguration ceremony held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP said the assignment before the committee is both significant and timely, particularly at a time when the nation’s evolving security challenges demand innovative thinking, strategic collaboration, and bold reforms to make policing more responsive to local realities.
Disu explained that the committee is expected to develop a practical framework for the operation of state policing in Nigeria without undermining the country’s national security structure.
The Police boss while urging members of the committee to carry out their assignment strictly within their specific terms of reference, added that if properly designed and implemented, the framework would bring law enforcement closer to the people, enhance local understanding of security dynamics, and enable faster responses to emerging threats within communities.
Earlier, Disu warned officers against human rights abuses, stressing that professionalism, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights would remain central to ongoing policing reforms under his leadership.
The strategic session forms part of early efforts by the new police chief to align senior leadership with his vision for the Nigeria Police Force.
