The character of Belle from Beauty and the Beast was inspired by real events from the 1500s, rooted in the life of Petrus Gonsalvus, a man born with a rare condition called hypertrichosis—which caused thick hair to grow all over his body, including his face.

Petrus was born in the Canary Islands and taken as a "wild man" to the French court. But he wasn’t a beast. He was educated, multilingual, and refined. He shocked the royal court—not by how he looked, but by how human he was. To many nobles, he was seen as a living curiosity. But to one woman, Catherine, he was something more.

Catherine was a noblewoman who was asked—some say ordered—to marry him. But over time, it wasn’t duty that kept her at his side. It was love. They had seven children, and though some were also born with hypertrichosis, they lived as a family for decades, even while being passed around European courts as exotic spectacles.

Their story spread across Europe. It fascinated writers and painters. And in the 18th century, it inspired Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve to write La Belle et la Bête—Beauty and the Beast.

In the fairy tale, Belle doesn’t fall in love with charm or status.
She falls in love with character.
