This early 1969 Triumph Trident T150T was imported a few years ago and still wears its original dealer-applied “Beauty Kit” styling. Introduced in 1970 to boost the Trident’s slow initial sales, the kit replaced the distinctive Ogle-designed “breadbox” tank and ray-gun silencers with more traditional Triumph items: a 650-style fuel tank, barrel-style mufflers, and a Bonneville-style grab rail. The result was a look more in line with Triumph’s popular twin-cylinder range, making the Trident more appealing in the U.S. market.

Since arriving in New Zealand, this bike has undergone a full engine rebuild and a careful recommissioning. While the engine had been opened during its U.S. life, it was stripped right down and rebuilt properly from the crank up. The work included a crank regrind, new rods, +.020” pistons, new valve guides, and a cleaned sludge trap. Reliability upgrades include a Tri-Spark electronic ignition system, an LP Williams anti-drain valve, and a Triples Unlimited clutch ramp mod for a lighter, smoother clutch action.

Brand new Wassell Evolution carburettors with lighter T160 springs were installed, a new 19T gearbox sprocket fitted, and an oil pressure gauge added for reassurance. The chassis was refreshed with new Dunlop TT100 tyres, new rear shocks, refurbished seat, and fresh swingarm bushes and steering head bearings. The tank and guards were also repainted, giving the bike a period-correct finish that looks every bit as good in person as it sounds.

The Trident has now been run in, with many miles spent fine-tuning. It starts easily, pulls strongly, shows good compression and oil pressure, and does not smoke. The legendary triple-cylinder soundtrack is present in full force. Considerably more has been invested into the restoration than the asking price—our loss, your gain.
