At the 1984 Olympics, coach Jack Daniels sat in the stands and counted the stride rates of elite distance runners. What did he find? Out of the 46 runners he observed, only one took less than 180 steps per minute, and they were still pretty close at 176 spm.
Some will advise that you set a metronome to 180 BPM and just step that fast. But cadence manipulation doesn’t tackle the root cause of your running form, AND forcing your stride rate up artificially could get you injured!!
If you want to improve your running cadence, you’ll want to understand the why you have a slow cadence before you start to make changes.
