Buttsu-ji Temple was founded in 1397 by Kobayakawa Shunpei, lord of Numata Takayama Castle, with the famous monks Guchu Shu and Buttoku Daitsu Zenji, and is the only Rinzai sect head temple west of Kyoto. In the past, it was treated on the same level as Nanzenji, one of the top five temples in Kyoto, and boasted a vast scale with 88 temples within the temple grounds and over 3,000 branch temples nationwide. After the Onin War, it fell into ruin and suffered several fires, but was somewhat rebuilt during the reign of Takakage, and has experienced many ups and downs to reach the present day.
Along the approach to the temple are the sub-temples of Eitoku-in and Shoho-in, which are especially beautiful in the autumn foliage season. After crossing the Kyomobashi Bridge beside a large dogwood tree, you will come across the temple gate, lecture hall, main hall, kuri (kitchen quarters), and other buildings.
