A farmer who filmed what some believe is Iceland's legendary Lagarfljot worm has denied that the footage is fake. The video showing something snaking through the water has become an Internet sensation, viewed by more than three million people since it was published on February 2nd. Farmer Hjortur Kjerulf said he was making a cup of coffee in his kitchen in Hrafnkelsstadir, in eastern Iceland, when he noticed something odd in the nearby river. He says he grabbed his camera and went down to the river, which is the legendary haunt of the Lagarfljot worm monster, called Lagarfljotsormur by locals.
Farmer Hjortur Kjerulf said, "I began to wonder what I was seeing and whether it was related to the Lagarfljot worm. I thought it would be wise to take some pictures of this thing because it looked so real... It reminded me of a swimming crocodile or even some kind of monster. The first thing I thought of when I saw this was the worm... There is absolutely no foul play on my behalf in this case. I did not create that thing in the river or make anything in my computer. This is as original as it gets."
However, another Icelander, Miisa McKeown showed that the worm is not actually moving in the water. By comparing the location of the worm's head to other objects in the video, she showed that the worm is stationary. The snaking motion is harder to explain, but skeptics suggest it's an inanimate object that became trapped in the swift currents of the river.
