In this video, we delve into the concept of ruling by other than what Allah has revealed, as discussed by Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen. We start with the profound reminder from Allah in the Quran: "Do not think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a day when the eyes will stare in horror." This sets the tone for an important discussion about the nature of ruling by other than the divine law.
Sheikh Uthaymeen provides a detailed breakdown of the issue of ruling by laws other than those revealed by Allah, dividing it into two main categories:
Complete Replacing Allah's Law: The first category refers to the complete abandonment of Allah's law in favor of human-made laws. This is a form of major kufr (disbelief) that takes one out of the fold of Islam, as it involves legislating for Allah’s servants what He has not revealed, effectively taking on the role of the Creator.
Deviating from Allah's Law: The second category involves situations where Allah’s laws remain in place but a ruler enacts a ruling that contradicts Allah’s decrees. This is explored through three distinct cases:
Major Kufr: When a ruler believes that an alternative law is better or equal to Allah's law.
Injustice (Dhulm): When a ruler, knowing Allah’s law is best, deviates from it out of personal enmity or to oppress others.
Sin (Fisq): When a ruler violates Allah’s law for personal gain or to serve others, yet believes that Allah's law is the best.
The Sheikh explains the Quranic verses that apply to each situation:
"And whoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, they are the disbelievers." (Quran 5:44) — Applies to major kufr.
"And whoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, they are the wrongdoers." (Quran 5:45) — Applies to injustice and oppression.
"And whoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, they are the corrupt." (Quran 5:47) — Applies to sin and corruption.
The Sheikh also warns that the admiration some have for non-Muslim systems and laws, to the point of preferring them over the rulings of Allah, is a grave mistake. The laws of Allah are valid until the Day of Judgment and are the most beneficial for mankind. Those who believe that other laws are more beneficial today are in error and should repent and return to the truth.
This lecture is crucial for understanding the dangers of deviating from Allah’s laws and the importance of adhering to His guidance in all matters of life.
