We went to South Cumberland State Park in Tennessee expecting to see some of the tallest waterfalls in the area. After stopping by the headquarters, we decided to first hike a different nearby trail.
Spending the day at South Cumberland State Park in Tennessee turned out to be an incredible adventure. We started our visit at Grundy Forest State Natural Area, which offers one of the most scenic hiking trails in Tennessee. At first, I wasn’t sure if the two-mile loop trail would impress us, but very quickly we realized we had found something special. The trail winds through the forest with plenty of shade, and before long we were greeted with multiple beautiful waterfalls tucked away along the path. One of the highlights was walking under a large grotto, which made the hike feel like an adventure straight out of a storybook.
Even though this wasn’t the trail we originally came to the area to hike, it quickly became one of my favorites in South Cumberland State Park. The waterfalls, forest scenery, and peaceful vibe made it the kind of trail I’d happily recommend to anyone looking for easy hikes with waterfalls in Tennessee. After finishing the loop, we made our way to Foster Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls in Tennessee. This waterfall is over 50 feet tall, and the sound of the rushing water surrounded us as we took in the view. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just love chasing waterfalls, Foster Falls is absolutely worth the stop.
South Cumberland State Park is unique because it’s spread out over different areas, with each section offering something special. From rock climbing near Foster Falls to family-friendly hikes in Grundy Forest, there’s something for every outdoor enthusiast here. We didn’t have time to see everything in one day, but I’ve already added spots like Denny Falls and the Fiery Gizzard Trail to my list for next time. I’d especially love to come back after a heavy rain, since the waterfalls in this area are even more impressive when the streams are flowing at their fullest.
One thing I’ve learned as a female hiker is that safety on the trail is always important. Whether I’m on a short two-mile loop or a longer adventure, I make sure to carry plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and let someone know where I’ll be. Hiking solo or with friends in Tennessee’s state parks can be an empowering experience, but it’s always smart to stay prepared.
If you’re planning a trip to South Cumberland State Park, I’d recommend giving yourself enough time to explore several of its natural areas. From Grundy Forest to Foster Falls, and even the longer trails that connect to the Cumberland Plateau, there are endless opportunities for outdoor adventures in Tennessee. This park is perfect for anyone who loves hiking, chasing waterfalls, camping, or exploring scenic trails in the southeast.
I’ll definitely be coming back to see more, and I can’t wait to share those adventures too.
