My lesson plans for African Studies and African American History are in an excel spreadsheet in order of how I want to present topics, documentaries/videos, events, and talking points. I also use the table of contents from the main curriculum I use as a spine or foundation for what I want to teach.

Since I know what we have , when I prepare for a topic, 1) I print and photocopy what I need to use, 2) pull out the books and write down page numbers, add sticky notes, and bookmark where to go, 3) I then set out the books being used for easy access, 4) I find any additional literature in my home library or our public library to bring the topic to life to bring the topic to life, 5) find documentaries or bring out our videos, etc.That's my approach to "lesson planning" for these two specific subjects!

I plan a few weeks in advance and keep it fluid/flexible because we like to dive deep and allow time for rabbit trails!If you would like a copy of spreadsheet I created of topics I want to / will teach, please email me at [email protected].
