My Favorite Things started life in the 1959 Broadway run of The Sound of Music, where Mary Martin and Patricia Neway sang it long before anyone thought of Christmas playlists. Julie Andrews later performed it on a 1961 holiday TV special and then again in the 1965 film, and that’s about when the song accidentally wandered into “Christmas song” territory. Even though it was never meant to be festive, all the talk of warm mittens, brown paper packages, sleigh bells, and “silver white winters” gave radio programmers an excuse and they’ve run with it ever since.
Michael Lowenstern is a leading bass clarinetist, composer, and educator known for his genre-blending solo work and his popular Earspasm YouTube channel. A longtime champion of new music, he has performed with ensembles ranging from Steve Reich and Musicians to the New Jersey Symphony, and his arrangements often reflect his playful, tech-savvy approach to the instrument. This arrangement for clarinet quartet is both playful and rhythmically challenging, creating a delightful presentation of this not-quite-holiday music.
