55 min. Teetł’it Zheh - Fort McPherson, NWT. 2014
Produced by Teetł’it Gwich'in Elders. Filmed and edited by Thea Luig.
This film tells the stories of four Teetł’it Gwich'in women who discovered great strength and wisdom within them when they started on their journey of recovery in the early 1970s. Sitting together over tea and old photos they remember the time when they left alcohol behind and started to live their life with a passion to support others. As counselors and volunteers at the Peel River Alcohol Society (PRAS), a community-based, volunteer-driven addiction program that was opened in 1973 in Fort McPherson, they helped change many peoples' lives for the better. Along the way, these women overcame many barriers fighting for an addiction program that was run the "Gwich'in way," which meant including the whole community, working together, sharing food, dancing and laughing, and - most importantly - being out on the land.
Featuring Elizabeth Colin (d. April 2014), (founder of the PRAS together with husband Neil Colin, counselor and volunteer), Dorothy Alexie (counselor and volunteer), Bertha Francis (counselor and volunteer), Jane Charlie (volunteer). Commentary by Mary Teya (community health representative, Deacon, and volunteer) and Charlie Snowshoe (counselor and volunteer).
