In an increasingly digital world, data with its associated data spaces is taking a prominent role. To provide a legal framework for this developing situation, Switzerland is about to implement a law to regulate data spaces and (secondary) data usage, to which our guest speaker substantially contributed (https://www.parlament.ch/de/ratsbetri..., in German).
With the federative political culture of the country, Swiss tourism and specifically its data have been organically grown for many decades and are hence very fragmented. This situation makes a joint marketing effort with target groups in many different foreign countries and an integrated tourist experience very difficult. To address this shortcoming in the new digital age, Swiss tourism is joining forces, where a common data space provides a crucial component.
The Pandemic hit the Swiss tourism sector very hard with a decline of almost 60% in international arrivals (SECO, 2020). The pandemic acted as an accelerator to the inevitable digital transformation the sector should face to optimize local supply offering and international demand allocation. The flagship project «Resilient Tourism» - started in June 2022 - involves seven research and over 30 industry partners. It will last until the end of 2026 and responds proactively to the challenges of digital transformation by empowering the travel sector at large with (i) reliable data to empower, (ii) new business models, processes and experience and (iii) tools for designing resilient tourism systems. Objective of the project is to create a National Data Infrastructure for Tourism (NaDIT) to connect data producers and providers with data users in order to develop innovative services, business models and processes to design resilient tourism systems in line with SDG objectives.
Our guest speaker André Golliez, lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences of Lucerne (HSLU) and responsible for the NaDIT architecture, has a long track record in data management in many sectors, such as finance, consulting, public sector, to name a few. He is founder of opendata.ch and Swiss Data Alliance, and he is currently serving as president for the latter. He is also initiator of numerous data hackdays in Switzerland, where he is joyfully organizing countless events for many years. Finally he is co-founder and managing partner of Zetamind AG, a Swiss consulting company for data value creation.
