During the Japanese Occupation in 1942, 19-year-old Lee Kuan Yew was caught in the Sook Ching mass screening of Chinese men at Jalan Besar Stadium. To avoid capture and likely execution, he hid at 75 Maude Road, then a rickshaw pullers’ boarding house, with help from someone who sheltered him.
Later, Lee Kuan Yew worked for the Japanese during the Japanese Occupation, mainly to survive.
