Modern culture trains people in sexual self-indulgence during the very years they should be learning self-governance, then expects them to suddenly embrace lifelong monogamy. This contradiction leaves people psychologically and morally unprepared for marriage, which is why many reject it altogether.
Marriage works not by suppressing desire, but by redirecting self-interest into a lifelong program of self-sacrifice, which increases our capacity to love, enjoy, and live virtuously.
