During WWI, the old Serbian folk song "Zar je morala doć" (Зар је морала доћ) was often sung along with the now famous ballad "Tamo daleko" (Тамо далеко) by the soldiers recuperating on the Greek island of Corfu after the withdrawal of the Serbian army through Albania. Eventually the two songs became inseparable and today "Tamo daleko" almost always begins with the first verse (or sometimes just the melody) of this song:
O zar je morala doć', ta tužna nesretna noć,
Kada si dragane moj, otiš'o u krvavi boj.
【Oh should it have come, that sad, unhappy night,
When you, my dear, went to a bloody fight.】
This was recorded in 1917, in New York, by an unnamed tambura orchestra listed simply as "Tamburaško pevačko društvo". ❖
