Commerce, Creativity and Collaboration: The Story of Royal Worcester and the Islamic World

Описание: This illustrated talk comes out of a project supported by WEST MIDLANDS MUSEUM DEVELOPMENT and the ISLAMIC ART AND CULTURE SSN, whose joint funds allowed our speaker, Fuchsia Hart, to spend time with our collections and archives exploring the connections and exchanges between Worcester porcelain and the worlds of Islam.

Fuchsia Hart is a PhD candidate at the Khalili Research Centre for the Art and Material Culture of the Middle East at the University of Oxford. She is also a former research assistant at the V&A where she worked on the upcoming Epic Iran exhibition (due to open in April!) and the 19th century Egypt and Syria project, and is a council member of the Iran Society.

Worcester’s porcelain industry looked all over the world for style models and inspiration and sent products to markets and customers across the globe. We wanted to understand and be better able to share the knowledge of the areas of our collections that have a relationship with the arts and worlds of Islam. Fuchsia’s time with us did exactly this and enabled us to enrich collections records and create a specific display. It was very exciting for us and Fuchsia when objects and archives in our collections connected directly with her knowledge of the V&A’s collections and her PhD research into the court of Fath ‘Ali Shah, Shah of Iran in the first part of the 19th century.

The talk is illustrated with new photography of collection and archive items enabled by the project, and was originally recorded as a Zoom Lecture on 11th February 2021.
