The Lanchester submachinegun is a British firearm which was reverse engineered from the German MP28/II, developed by George Lanchester and produced by Sterling Armaments Company from 1941 to 1945. Two variants were manufactured, the Mk. 1 which was similar to the MP28 in that it was select-fire capable and had a graduated rear sight up to 600 yards and the Mk. 1* which featured full-auto only fire capability and a simplified 100/200 yard flip-up rear sight. Additionally, earlier Lanchesters featured a solid-brass magazine housing/well (later changed to steel) and bayonet lug for a Pattern 1907 bayonet. Build quality is robust and although not as refined as the MP28, the Lanchester is a very capable submachinegun that is reliable and pleasant to shoot but is heavy. As such, the Lanchester saw service in both the Royal Navy and Royal Airforce until the 1970s and are still occasionally encountered in modern day conflicts by rebel fighting forces and other paramilitary organizations.
