The Need for the Upgrade
The current T-90 fleet, known as the "Bhishma" in India, uses a 125mm smoothbore main gun that is currently limited in its ability to fire high-penetration ammunition. The depth of penetration (DoP) of the current rounds is around 600 mm, which is considered insufficient to effectively engage and destroy advanced composite and reactive armor systems used on contemporary tanks.


To address this, the Army has specified the need for new ammunition with a depth of penetration in the 800–1000 mm range.

Details of the New Barrels
The upgrade is not limited to just the barrel; it involves an overhaul of the entire gun system and ordnance. The new barrels are expected to:

Handle Higher Pressure: The current barrels are limited by a safety margin of 600 Mega Pascals (Mpa). The new barrels will have improved metallurgy and design to safely handle the pressures required for firing more powerful, high-penetration rounds.

Improve Lethality: By boosting the penetration power, the T-90s will be able to defeat the latest armor systems used by potential adversaries, ensuring battlefield dominance.

Maintain Ammunition Compatibility: The new barrels will also be designed to continue firing existing ammunition, as well as new, more lethal rounds. This includes the capability to fire an indigenous anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) through the gun barrel.

Broader Modernization Context
This barrel upgrade is part of a series of modernization efforts for the T-90 fleet, which forms the backbone of the Indian Army's armored forces with over 1,100 units. Other upgrades in the pipeline include:

New Engines: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the procurement of new 1350 HP engines to replace the current 1000 HP ones. This will improve the tank's power-to-weight ratio and agility, which is crucial for operations in high-altitude and rugged terrains.


Upgraded Electronics: Modernized T-90s are receiving advanced fire control systems, digital ballistic computers, and improved thermal imaging sights to enhance target acquisition and accuracy.

Improved Protection: The tanks are being fitted with upgraded Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) to increase their survivability against modern anti-tank munitions.
