The 1975 murder of John Hardin is compelling for several reasons. Not only is it the only unsolved murder in Clermont, FL, but police never found enough evidence to even name a suspect. After a late-night call from a client lured Hardin, his second wife, and his child out of their house, his slayer cut their phone lines and waited for an opportunity to carry out their act. Later that night, the assailant drew Hardin away from the house with a truck fire and shot him in the back with a 20-gauge shotgun.

Years later, a woman reportedly dreamed about the house and moved her family into it. They claimed a ghost haunted the house, dressed in the same clothing Hardin wore the night of his end and using the same back staircase that led to his demise. In fact, multiple residents in the house alleged paranormal activity in the home, eventually catching the attention of television show Unsolved Mysteries. The haunting and the show spurred police to reopen the case, although the spirit supposedly fled after getting its fifteen minutes of fame.
