Frankly, I'm sick and tired of being offered a 'smoky' cocktail in a bar, only to be given some blended scotch or weak-as-hell mezcal diluted with bland ingredients that don't contribute to the overall flavour profile. Today, I have sought to answer the source of my own gripes.
I have taken some heavily peated scotch whisky, and some pungent mezcal, and endeavoured to push the REAL limit as to how smoky a cocktail can get. Turns out? Pretty damn smoky.

Recipes
#1 Mezcal Cocktail
2oz Madre Mezcal
0.25oz lapsang souchong & toasted chilli pepper syrup
3 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes hopped grapefruit bitters
Stir over ice
Smoke with hickory wood chips
Garnish with a flamed grapefruit peel
Enjoy
#2 Peated Scotch Cocktail
2oz Laphroaig 10yr
0.75oz lapsang souchong & toasted chilli pepper syrup
1oz lime juice
8 mint leaves
Shake over ice
Double strain into a glass rimmed with salt, chipotle chilli, and smoke paprika
Smoke with oak wood chips
Garnish with a mint sprig
Enjoy!
Smoke n' spice syrup
Brew 1 part lapsang souchong tea
Toast aleppo pepper flakes in a pan (to taste)
Add 2 parts sugar to pan
Add lapsang souchong
Stir until simmering and sugar is dissolved
Pass through a sieve into a bottle
