Mir Ahmad Safi and his family fled to Kyiv when Kabul fell to the Taliban. The family evacuated again only six months later when Russia attacked.

Sumayya Safi was born Wednesday, Feb. 23, in a hospital in the mountains of western Ukraine, near where her Afghan family had been staying in the basement of a U.N. refugee agency.
The next day, Russia invaded her country.
Mir Safi and his family had fled Kabul, Afghanistan, in August as the Taliban took over. Mir had worked as a fixer for USA TODAY, helping our journalists covering the war. He was also a prosecutor in the Afghan government.
